Learning to teach

I wanted to get better prepared for teaching than only counting on experience gained on the job. Hence, I attended a seminar on college pedagogy this week. There will be more events over the course of this year, and there will even be an exam at the end. Teachers are not treated different from students…

My first impression is that the seminar is better than I expected. A blend of theory and practice, and even some examples used on the first day. One thing I am curious about is the assignment that we have for the spring semester. We are supposed to plan a teaching session, teach, supervise our colleagues, and evaluate our performance. I have no ordinary classroom teaching this term, so I wonder how I will map this assignment to either a group of bachelor students I supervise on their thesis or to the two master students who I meet with regularly for their elective on software security. It is going to be an interesting year.
