It was a convenient coincidence that we had reached network security, anonymity, and data protection in the IT security class I teach at HTWG Konstanz. The same week the movie „Citizenfour“ was shown in a local cinema. The movie is a documentary about the revelations of the former NSA employee Edward Snowden on extent and depth of surveillance of digital communication by government agencies. In the lecture on Thursday morning we had discussed technical and societal aspects of the use of strong encryption. The movie in the evening the same day put the theoretical discussion in a current and practical perspective.
Thanks to all 30 students from the department of computer science that participated and thanks to Scala cinema and the department of computer science for financially supporting the screening of the movie.
