Opting out of full-body scanning

scanner-control-pointI was travelling lately. At CGN airport, they had installed new full-body security scanners. A small sign indicated that the scanners were supposed to cause no damage to passengers‘ health and that their use was optional. However, the setup of checkpoint led people to believe that use was not optional.

Equipment had been placed so that you had to actively step over a line and bypass the scanner on its side. Nobody in the line before me did this. I instructed my children to not use the scanner and did the same. We were all subjected to a manual search and my backpack was subsequently randomly selected for an additional check for eplosives. Staff at the checkpoint behaved friendly and professional.

I was not allowed to take a picture of the checkpoint, so I added a sketch in this post to show how people were nudged to just accept and use the scanners.
