In February, professors, lab managers, administrative employees, and students at the HTWG computer science department brainstormed and collected what we like, dislike and want to avoid to become as a department. The exercise yielded more than 250 items, ranging from great freedom in teaching and research to scarce office space and little international appeal. We decided to further survey and categorise the results and come up with recommendations what topics the department’s management should address in the future.
I am part of the subgroup tasked with preparing a report to the department head; we came up with „Informatik 2020“ (Computer Science 2020) as a working title for our group.
The main areas that we will discuss in the group are:
- External reception of the department, e.g. by applicants, companies, partners, funding agencies, prospective employees as well as internally at the university
- Infrastructure, administration and departmental processes
- Self-conception of the department and input to strategy
- Internal communication
- Teaching, research, and industrial placements
- Involvement and motivation
We expect to have the report completed by late May.
